As a new contributor here at inReads, I am very excited to be reviewing existing blogs; reading them, reviewing them, sharing them, and helping with exposure! I look forward to finding all different types of reads in the “blogosphere” as we like to call it, and sharing my thoughts with each of you.
That said, let’s go ahead and get started with my first find. I stumbled across The Everygirl earlier this week and I would certainly classify it as bookmark-worthy for those ladies out there looking for a little inspiration, especially for those tough days where you hate the world and don’t want to get out of bed.
The Everygirl Manifesto reads, Whether she is searching for her dream job or a new city to call home; is saving up for a down payment or a trip to Europe; is learning to cook or speak another language, she wants a little guidance. She wants to be inspired. She is The Everygirl. This is for her.
And these girls really do cater to all facets of females. From beauty to entertainment, to finance and fashion, to health and even politics, Danielle and Alaina speak to everything a girls gotta know to get through life.
Among all the topics discussed on their site, they host multiple blogs, one of which is titled Coffee Talk. Each post asks an intimate question to the readers, and offers an opportunity to offer your thoughts and opinions.
The post that intrigued me most was If you Could Meet Any Woman For Lunch, Who Would it Be and What Would You Order? This grabbed my attention for a couple reasons. One, hypothetical questions such as this make your brain work! You gotta dig around and deliberate options to come up with the most qualified answer for yourself. Two, there are so many influential women I would LOVE to have had the opportunity to do lunch with, I would have a hard time deciding on just one!
In any event, after some thoughtful reflection, I think my pick for my ideal lunch date would be Oprah Winfrey. I am sure a lot of people may find this to be a cliche choice, however I admire Oprah for many MANY different reasons.
First would be the obvious; her monumental success. She was born into poverty and worked hard to get to become the “Oprah” we all know today. She was named America’s Most Powerful Woman and the Most Influential Woman in the World, respectively. She fits the mold of the “rags to riches” ideology to a T; and who doesn’t love a story of someone working his or her way to the top?!
Oprah also changed the game in terms of talk shows. The term Oprahfication was actually coined by the Wall Street Journal and means “public confession in the form of therapy. Oprah went from last-place ratings in year one, as a half-hour Chicago based talk show, to stealing the #1 spot from Phil Donahue. In just three years, she doubled his national audience when her show became nationally syndicated, making The Oprah Winfrey Show the most watched day-time talk show in America.
The best thing about Oprah is her vision. She let her talk-show lead her to her own magazine, book club, television network and heavy involvement in philanthropic causes such as Oprah’s Angel Network.
My favorite aspect of Oprah is that she has created a self-made empire. She is an inspiration to girls and women everywhere; she has overcome so much adversity in terms of not only being a female, but a female of color. She has battled weight gain, critics and the odds time and time again; yet she still has always managed to come out on top.
At a net worth of $2.7 billion, I think every lady can learn a thing or two from Oprah; how to persevere, how to follow your dreams, and how to become a woman of inspiration yourself.
Now… what would I order for lunch? Well, I would imagine I would only have time to sip on a cup of coffee because I would be entirely too busy taking notes and asking questions.
