It’s always empowering to come across females who know how to tell it like it is. Some women are able to write in a way that others relate to and empathize with, but also makes them laugh and enjoy themselves. Today, I found a woman who encompasses all the above, and I am truly inspired as a fellow blogger myself.
Barbs Blast Humor Blog is a personal, funny blog about pop culture, entertainment, and everything else you can imagine. She boasts with a very direct tagline of “turning hassles into humor one laugh at a time.” Barb Best has quite the credentials in terms of her writing and humor background; most notably, as the 2010 Erma Bombeck Global Humor Winner for an essay on sleep and sex, which can be found on Humorwriters.org. Erma Bombeck was a pioneer in the world of funnies. She was best known for her syndicated newspaper column titled At Wits End (tales of a midwestern housewife from a humorist’s standpoint). She wrote over 4,000 columns and was featured in over 900 newspapers, earning herself over 30 million readers by the 1970′s. Needless to say, she is quite the inspiration for women and comedians alike.
Some of Best’s humor musings have been performed by comedians such as Joan Rivers. She contributes to many women-published online magazines, including more.com, divinecaroline.com and funnynotslutty.com. She has also been featured in the New York Times and the L.A. Times. She wrote a book titled 100 Fast & Funny, a “ha-musing” compilation of humorous quips and one-liners on love, sex, aging, and philosophy. Barb is also an avid supporter of RxLaughter, a healthcare initiative promoting the healing power of laughter, which is supported by other comedians such as Kevin James, Ray Romano and Barry Katz.
I appreciate Barb’s work for a number of reasons. For one, she tells it like it is: no sugar coating, no bullshit. She not only puts her own funny spin on normal, day-to-day topics, but she literally makes fun of herself and society as a whole. For example, take her post about the beloved iPhone. I, for one, have an absolute love-hate dichotomy going on with mine. I don’t know about you, but I feel completely lost without it when I forget it at home; yet, I do nothing but bitch when it is running too slow, it dies quicker than it charges, and I’m fighting with other smartphone users for Wi-Fi in the area. Barb hits the nail on the head with the trending obsession we are developing with our hand-held, life-altering communication device.
She touches on guilty-pleasure TV, pet peeves, sleep deprivation, and just about anything else you can think of. She writes whatever the hell she thinks and feels like, without any remorse or care about the consequences. We live in a world today much different from days past, where you are encouraged to express yourself however the hell you please! What else are blogs for? Some people don’t have the time to write, some don’t have the voice, and some are just too boring to write stuff worth reading. Barb Best on the other hand, can do it all…and she has created quite the stir along the way. Check her out and enjoy!
