Who remembers the Spice Girls? While they happened to come along during my adolescence–and I was borderline-obsessed with these five gorgeous Brits–the one thing we all remember about them was their motto and tagline: GIRL POWER!
Even though the fifteen minutes of fame are over for those broads, they certainly left their mark on the wonderful world of pop culture. Women now group together to represent the female gender as best they can, in plenty of forms. One of my favorites being the humorist chicks over at Funny Not Slutty.
FnS is a website where females collaborate and share funny stories, musings, rants, videos and much more. Lead publisher Jacki Schklar (who is also the lead filmmaker at Funny or Die) says of Funny Not Slutty, “…when you get a number of females together who want to show off their stuff to get attention, they are usually slutty chicks. But we’re not. We’re funny chicks!”
I particularly like this mindset because I know too many attention-starved bitches who will make out with other girls at the bar for attention. Or post an entirely too personal diary entry as a Facebook status. Or dance like a hoochie to impress some random dude. It’s obnoxious, pathetic, and just about everything in between.
Boasting quite the line-up of qualified comic writers, Funny Not Slutty‘s contributors include Barb Best of Barbs Blast Humor Blog, Alexandra (BlogHer 11′s Voice of the Year for Humor), Anna Lefler (author of The CHICKtionary), and other hysterical writers. FnS offers opportunities for funny ladies from anywhere to write in with suggested topics and be featured on the site too. And apparently, Ms. Schklar is super strict when it comes to deciding what stuff is worthy to get posted, so you can always count on quality, laughable content.
The greatest part about this site is their relate-ability. The majority of these women are like you and me. They get up every morning and go to work, they make dinner each night, they read gossip magazines. And they have a “happy place” in FnS where they can vent, share, and laugh.
While we clearly aren’t all stand up comedians, FnS has a place for every girl with a funny side. Their web-based community, called the FnS Comedy Network, is like a Facebook for females looking to swap funny stories, photos, and videos.
From recipes, to sex stories, to mommyhood, to dating, to music, and even politics, there are plenty of laughs to share. The concept of the website stemmed from the feeling that the majority of today’s jokes and comedy are geared toward teenage males, and there is a huge market out there of women looking for comedic relief as well. The ladies of FnS have been featured on Funny or Die, Bestviral.com and even TVGuide.com.
These ladies got it goin’ on, and certainly represent “Girl Power” to the fullest. If I have one piece of advice for potential readers and visitors out there, be sure you have a legitimate sense of humor before entering Funny Not Slutty. If you’re easily offended, these ladies and their musings might not be for you.
